What is a self practice class?

To really understand and appreciate what a self practice class is, I believe you need to attend a few times. We really need to do it to get it!

Despite what many think, you don’t have to be an advanced yogi to attend a self practice. You can start from a complete beginner and at any age as it is possible to tailor the practice to the individual.  Strength, flexibility and ease of movement come with a regular practice.  It doesn’t matter what we can or cannot do.  The joy of the practice is the practice itself.

The beauty of this transformative system of yoga is that is it designed to allow us to move at our own pace so that we can become more aware of our body and how it feels, of how we breath and how we move with body and breath.

When we first attend, we begin to learn the Primary series of postures called Yoga Chikitsa meaning yoga therapy.  Each time we come to class we practice the sequence of poses to where we have been taught.  It often takes time to learn the sequence and that is completely ok.  Postures are added to our sequence as our bodies become stronger and balanced.  It can be like having a mini one-to-one within a group setting.

The attraction of learning in this way is that we can practice each pose in a way that suits our body.  Our teacher offering modifications, advice and adjustment (if appropriate and with dialogue with the student).

By attending an assisted self-practice class this can give us the inspiration, confidence and discipline to roll out the mat on our own at home.

By allowing ourselves time to synchronise our body and breath we find this can bring our mind into focus, calm and provide an inner strength to carry with us into daily life.
